I. Menschenrechte im Licht der Kunst
I. Human Rights in the Light of Art
This short report by Ajda Sticker, ORF: HeimatFremdeHeimat, gives an insight into the history of human rights and the special role of Eleanor Roosevelt.

After President Roosevelt’s death in 1945, President Harry S. Truman appointed Eleanor a delegate to the United Nations (UN), where she served as chairman of the Commission on Human Rights (1946–51) and played a major role in the drafting and adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). In the last decade of her life she continued to play an active part in the Democratic Party, working for the election of Democratic presidential nominee Adlai Stevenson in 1952 and 1956.
“Brightens dark times and keeps body and mind moving:
The installation Wiener Lichtblicke by artist Victoria Coeln combines human rights with art at ten squares, parks and streets in the city. As soon as dusk falls, the lights come on: rainbow colours, white light and even graphics of artistic fantasy animals – like Deborah Sengl’s zebra tiger – shine every night. For the walk in the form of a schnitzel (or in the form of Austria 😉 it is best to use the ready-made online map in Google Maps with pictures and information on all places. (Die StadtSpionin The CitySpy)
“Space and art for all as a human right – walk to significant places.
The seven-kilometre walk to all the installations takes about one and a half hours, starting from the Platz der Menschenrechte in front of the Museumsquartier. It takes you from the 4th to the 3rd district, on to the Innere Stadt, then to the 8th district, from there to the 7th district and back to the start. An overview map of the tour can be downloaded from the website of NIPAS, which is responsible for the design. On the same website, a Google Map is embedded on which the individual stations are also marked, supplemented by photos and explanatory texts on the respective locations of the installations. If you star the embedded map, you can access it regularly in your Google Maps app.” (1000 Things to do in Vienna)

It is a personal concern of ours to strengthen human rights, the courage for civil courage and thus also the courage for the appropriation of space and self-empowerment with the means of art. In this sense, it is more than important to us to create open spaces – open to all people and free from a priori fixed interpretations. Everyone should be able to find their own space – not what they think they have to see and discover or understand. In this way, perceptions, memories and visionary ideas can complement and perhaps even contradict each other – or find and invent something entirely new – on the scale of art, this will never be wrong. (Heike Sütter)
To the special delight of the children, light graphics not only overwrite fire walls and city elements, but above all ground and grass surfaces, squares and paths. The spontaneous light play of the youngest is an invitation to all, including older generations, to open themselves to curiosity and the desire to discover and to explore public space anew. Beyond the holidays and the turn of the year, the Wiener Lichtblicke create an opportunity to move body and mind despite all limitations. This is also a human right. Up close, you can see in the lines that white light splits into spectral colours, a reference to the metaphor of the rainbow for dignity, equality and peace.
In the Light of Art, people who are committed to human rights, both professionally and privately, have their say. In the 7-minute trailer of the Wiener Lichtblicke [Vienna Rays of Hope] they say what moves them and what they want to bring into the light.
